PILLAR · STORE OPERATIONS

Shopify Store Operations — The Branva Playbook

The site itself is the conversion surface. Every weak PDP, slow mobile load, or buried trust signal compounds into permanent revenue loss. This pillar covers the systems that keep the on-site experience working — audits, conversion benchmarks, mobile UX, checkout friction, and SEO foundations.

What store operations actually covers

Store ops is everything happening on the Shopify storefront itself — the parts that don't change daily but determine whether your traffic converts.

  • Homepage and PDP structure
  • Mobile UX (where 70% of traffic lives)
  • Site speed (especially mobile LCP)
  • Email capture mechanics
  • Checkout friction
  • SEO foundations (title tags, schema, unique copy)
  • Trust signals and social proof placement
  • Marketing pulls traffic in. Store ops makes that traffic convert. Brands that scale invest in both. Brands that stay flat invest in marketing while their PDP loses 30%+ of potential conversions to fixable friction.

    The 30-minute audit framework

Quarterly: run the 30-minute audit on your own store. Ten checks, 3 minutes each, ranked by leverage.

  • Homepage hero (5-second test)
  • Product pages (5 must-haves on PDP)
  • Mobile UX (real phone, not devtools)
  • Site speed (PageSpeed Insights)
  • Email capture (popup + footer + PDP)
  • Checkout friction (test purchase on mobile)
  • Analytics setup (GA4 + Conversions API)
  • Active email flows (4 core flows running?)
  • Ad creative (variants + refresh cadence)
  • SEO basics (titles, meta, schema, unique copy)
  • Output should be 2–3 highest-leverage fixes — not a 30-page PDF. Full breakdown: how to audit your Shopify store in 30 minutes.

Conversion rate benchmarks (read your number honestly)

A conversion rate by itself is meaningless. What matters is your CVR relative to your category, AOV bracket, traffic source, and device.

  • Beauty / personal care: ~3.0% median
  • Food / CPG: ~2.8%
  • Apparel: ~1.8%
  • Home / decor: ~1.0%
  • High-AOV electronics: ~0.7%
  • Mobile converts ~30–40% lower than desktop. Email converts at 4–6%, paid social at 0.6–1.6%. If you're judging your sitewide CVR against a generic 2–3% benchmark, you're comparing apples and oranges.

Mobile UX is the largest gap most brands have

Mobile is 70%+ of traffic at most Shopify brands. But mobile CVR is typically 30–40% lower than desktop. If yours is more than 50% below desktop, you have fixable issues.

    The highest-leverage mobile fixes:

  • Shop Pay + Apple Pay visible at checkout. Express checkout buttons lift mobile conversion 15–35%.
  • Hero image compressed. Single biggest speed killer on most Shopify themes. Run images through TinyPNG or use Shopify's built-in optimization.
  • Mobile LCP under 2.5 seconds. Use Google PageSpeed Insights monthly.
  • PDP layout for thumb-first usage. Big tap targets (44px+), single-column layout, CTA above the fold without scrolling.
  • Checkout friction

Per Baymard Institute, the average ecommerce checkout abandonment rate is ~70%. The top reasons cited:

  • 21% — couldn't see total cost upfront
  • 17% — checkout too long / complicated
  • 13% — extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees)
  • 11% — couldn't checkout as guest
  • All four of those are fixable in Shopify settings. The highest-leverage fix: show shipping costs (or "free shipping over $X") on the cart page, not buried at checkout step 3. This single change recovers 5–15% of abandoned carts at most brands.

    SEO foundations

SEO for Shopify isn't an off-page link-building game first. It's an on-page foundations game. The unsexy work that compounds:

  • Title tags + meta descriptions on top 50 pages. Each unique, keyword-led, under 60 chars / 160 chars respectively.
  • Schema markup on product pages (Product schema with price + availability + reviews), collection pages, and blog posts.
  • Unique copy on collection pages — 200–400 words minimum. Collection pages are the highest-ranking SEO opportunity on most Shopify stores.
  • Internal linking depth — every important page should be reachable from the homepage in 3 clicks or fewer.
  • Sitemap submitted in Google Search Console, monitored for indexing issues monthly.
  • Full breakdown: the role of SEO in ecommerce.

    Trust signals on PDP

Brands with strong trust elements on PDP convert 30–60% higher than those without. The trust signals that matter most for Shopify brands:

  • Star rating + review count visible at the buy box
  • Free shipping threshold (and shipping policy link)
  • Return policy (visible, not buried in footer)
  • Customer review photos (UGC)
  • "Made in [country]" or sourcing transparency
  • Express payment options (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal)
  • If your PDP is missing 3+ of these, the conversion lift from adding them is bigger than most CRO tests.

    The operating cadence

Store ops doesn't need daily attention. The cadence that works:

  • Weekly: check Microsoft Clarity heatmaps on top 5 pages (5 min), check Search Console for new ranking pages (5 min)
  • Monthly: run PageSpeed on homepage + top PDP, audit any new pages added in the past month
  • Quarterly: full 30-minute audit, refresh top 5 collection page copy, schema markup audit
  • Annually: full PDP redesign consideration based on a year of test data
  • That's it. Brands obsessing over daily CRO tweaks at this stage are usually masking a marketing problem (low traffic volume) with a CRO project.

Why Your Shopify Size Filter Doesn't Work (Letter vs. Numeric Sizing)

Shopify's native filter treats "M" and "10" as different sizes — even when they're the same fit. That breaks the apparel browsing experience and silently bleeds conversion. Here's why, and the fix.

Apparel stores on Shopify have higher bounce rates than any other category — because shoppers waste time on items not in their size. Here's the structural fix: ask once, personalize everything, measure what changed.
