How Do I Use Claude to Run SEO for Shopify? (Step-by-Step)

Using Claude to run SEO for a Shopify store

The end-to-end loop we run on client Shopify stores — free audits in, ranked decisions out, fixes shipped through the connector. Part of our AI workflows pillar. If you haven't connected Claude to Shopify yet, start with how to connect Claude to Shopify.

The customer pain point

Most Shopify SEO content stops at "do keyword research and add alt text." Useless. The real question for a founder is: what's the loop? What do I audit, what do I hand to Claude, what does Claude actually decide, and how does the fix land in my store?

This post is that loop, end to end. Five stages, copy-able prompt at every stage, free tools at every stage.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

Stage What you do What Claude does
Audit Run free Ahrefs + Search Console crawls Nothing yet — you collect the raw data
Hand off Export CSVs + paste them in Reads, normalizes, asks for missing context
Decide Provide store context (revenue, AOV) Ranks fixes by revenue impact, names the top 3
Ship Approve the fix Stages the change in Shopify, waits for "apply"
Monitor Re-run audit weekly Diffs vs last week, flags regressions

The non-negotiable: demand a ranked decision, never a description. Same rule as the Klaviyo prompts and the Shopify connector prompts.

The 5-Stage SEO Loop

  1. Audit with free tools (Ahrefs Webmaster Tools + Google Search Console). Export CSVs.
  2. Hand the CSVs to Claude with store context (revenue, AOV, category).
  3. Demand a ranked fix list by revenue impact, not by SEO-score points.
  4. Ship the top fix via the Shopify connector — staged, you approve, Claude applies.
  5. Monitor weekly — re-run the audit, diff against last week, flag regressions.

Most founders do stages 1 and 3 (audit → vague todo list) and never get to ship or monitor. That's why their SEO doesn't move.

Stage 1 — Audit (Free Tools Only)

You don't need a paid Ahrefs subscription. The free stack covers 90% of what an operator needs:

The detailed walkthrough is in the companion post: how do I run a free Shopify SEO audit with Ahrefs?.

What you export from this stage:

That's the input bundle.

Stage 2 — Hand Exports to Claude

The prompt that turns CSVs into a decision. Paste the audit exports as attachments or pasted text. The structured ask is the entire game:

I run a Shopify store. Below are 4 exports:
1. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools site audit (CSV, all issues)
2. Google Search Console Performance — last 90 days (CSV)
3. GSC Coverage — any excluded/error URLs
4. PageSpeed scores for 7 key pages

Store context:
- Niche: [your niche, e.g. women's activewear]
- Monthly revenue: [$X]
- AOV: [$Y]
- Current monthly organic traffic: [Z sessions]
- Top 5 product/collection pages by revenue: [list]

Do not summarize. Do not list every issue. Do this:

A. Bucket every issue into one of:
   - DIRECT-REVENUE (broken page on a top-5 revenue URL, indexing
issue on money pages, Core Web Vitals failing on top pages)
   - INDIRECT-REVENUE (queries we rank #4–#15 for that could move
to top 3 with on-page work, missing schema on product pages,
weak internal linking to top-5 pages)
   - HOUSEKEEPING (alt text gaps, low-impact 404s, sitemap nits)

B. Rank the top 3 fixes by *estimated monthly revenue impact* at my
AOV and conversion rate. Show your math (traffic uplift × CVR ×
   AOV). Be conservative.

C. For the #1 fix, give me: the exact change, the exact URLs/products
affected, and whether it's a Shopify admin task, a theme file edit,
   or a content task.

Be decisive. Don't say "consider testing." Pick.

That prompt is the difference between "Claude gave me a 40-item to-do list" and "Claude told me the one change worth $1,400/month and the second worth $600/month."

Stage 3 — Decide What to Fix First

Claude will give you something like:

#1 — Add missing product schema to top 12 collection pages. Current rich-snippet rate: 0%. Adding Product schema with price + availability lifts SERP CTR 25% (industry benchmark). On 8,400 monthly impressions for the top 12 pages, a 25% CTR lift = ~280 extra clicks/mo × your 2.1% CVR × $74 AOV = **$435/mo recovery, recurring**. Effort: 1 theme file edit, ~30 min.

That's a decision. Not "improve your structured data." A dollar figure, an effort estimate, a specific page set.

Push back if Claude hedges. Ask: "Rank these. Don't give me three equal options. Which is biggest and why?" The structure of the prompt is what forces the structure of the answer.

For the deeper "why benchmarks matter" mechanic, the same logic that makes Klaviyo analysis useful applies here — without category benchmarks (CTR uplift from schema, average DR for your niche, etc.) Claude compares your numbers to a vague internal average and hands you horoscopes.

Stage 4 — Ship Fixes Through the Shopify Connector

For changes that touch Shopify data (product titles, meta descriptions, collection descriptions, alt text, redirects), Claude can stage and ship them through the connector. The discipline is the same as the bulk price update flow: stage → sample → approve → apply.

Example prompt for the kind of fix the audit will surface:

Using the Shopify connector:

1. List every product in the "Bestsellers" collection where the
meta description is either empty OR under 80 characters.
2. For each, draft a 140–155 char meta description that:
   - Leads with the product's primary keyword
   - Includes a benefit + a call-to-action
   - Mentions free shipping if order > $50 (we offer this)
3. Show me the first 10 in a before/after table + the total count.

Do NOT apply anything. Wait for "apply" after I review.

Common SEO fixes Claude can stage through the connector:

Theme-file edits (schema.org JSON-LD, image sizing, lazy-loading) are outside the connector — you ship those through the theme editor or Shopify CLI. The companion post GitHub repos that help lists the tools we use for the theme side.

Stage 5 — Monitor Weekly

The weekly loop is what separates "I ran an audit once" from "I run SEO." Same audit, every Monday, diff against last week:

Compare this week's AWT site audit CSV to last week's (both
attached). Don't list every issue.

Tell me:
1. Net new issues (regressions) introduced in the last 7 days,
   ranked by severity
2. Issues resolved (count + which ones)
3. For any regression on a top-5 revenue page (URLs below), name it
explicitly and give me the likely cause

Be brief. I want a 5-bullet status, not a report.

This catches the kind of slow drift that kills SEO: a theme update breaks alt text on PDPs, an app injects a duplicate canonical, a bulk import lands with empty meta descriptions. Without the weekly diff, you discover those 3 months later when traffic is down 15% and the trail is cold.

We automate this on client stores — the audit, the diff, the email summary — using a scheduled job that calls the Anthropic API. The pattern is in the weekly metrics workflow we use across operations.

The Failure Modes

Three ways this loop goes wrong:

1. You skip Stage 1 and paste a screenshot. Same mistake as the founder who couldn't get Klaviyo analysis — without the structured CSV, Claude has no data to rank against. Always export.

2. You skip Stage 3 and accept the first answer. Claude's first pass often hedges. Push back. "Rank these by revenue. Pick one." If you don't demand the decision, you don't get one.

3. You skip Stage 5. Most SEO compounds slowly. Without the weekly diff you don't see the regressions until they've already cost you. The audit is cheap when it's a habit and expensive when it's a fire drill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a paid Ahrefs subscription?

No, for a single Shopify store. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for sites you verify ownership of, and it covers site audit + top pages + backlinks. The paid tier matters for competitor research at scale — not for running your own SEO. The detailed free-only walkthrough is in our companion post.

Can Claude write meta descriptions in bulk?

Yes — staged through the Shopify connector, with the confirm-before-apply gate. You review the first 10, see the total count, type "apply." Claude executes. This is the safest way to ship bulk content changes.

What if my audit returns 400 issues?

That's the point of Stage 3. 400 issues bucket into ~30 housekeeping items, ~10 indirect-revenue items, and 2–3 direct-revenue items. The direct-revenue bucket is what you ship this week. The rest waits. The ranking is the job — without it, you spend a month fixing alt text and never touch the broken schema on your top-revenue page.

Does Claude need to be the paid plan to do this?

For pasting CSV exports and getting prompts back — no. For using the Shopify connector to ship fixes, yes — see do I need a paid Claude plan for Shopify.

How long does the full loop take to set up?

First time: ~2 hours (Ahrefs verification, GSC access, exporting + prompting). After that: ~30 min/week for the monitor loop, ~1 hour per real fix shipped. The compounding is what makes the time worth it.
