Shopify checkout page tests that lift conversion — 12 things to try

The checkout page is where the highest-leverage CRO wins live. Traffic to add-to-cart is a big surface with lots of variables; add-to-cart to purchase is a much smaller surface with a much clearer job. Small changes here often produce measurable revenue lifts because everyone testing has already decided to buy — you're just protecting the conversion.
Shopify now lets you customize the checkout extensively via Checkout Extensibility (Plus + Advanced plans get the most). Below are the 12 tests we run in production, in order of expected impact.

Key Takeaways
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Highest-lift single test? | Free shipping progress bar OR review block. Both routinely +8-15% checkout completion. |
| Where do most brands leak? | Steps 6 (urgency), 4 (shipping surprise), 7 (missing add-ons). |
| How much traffic to A/B properly? | 300+ checkouts per variant. Below that, use rollouts not experiments. |
| What NOT to add? | Fake urgency, false scarcity, more form fields, cross-sells of low-fit products. |
| What Shopify plan do I need? | Basic supports many. Full Checkout Extensibility (custom sections) requires Plus. |
Ground rules for checkout testing
Three rules before running any test:
1. One change at a time. Multivariate at checkout traffic volumes = noise. Test one variable.
2. 7-14 days minimum. Ecommerce has strong day-of-week effects. Anything under a full week + change lies to you.
3. Do no harm. Every "trust" element you add costs load time and cognitive load. If the test doesn't lift, remove it. Bloat is a slow silent conversion killer.
Now the tests, in expected-lift order.
1. Review block above checkout summary
Show 2-3 real reviews above the order summary. Real names, real specifics, real ★★★★★.
Why it works: Cold checkout traffic (especially first-time buyers) hits final doubt at checkout — "am I sure about this brand?" Reviews at this point reduce cart abandonment.
Expected lift: 6-12% on checkout completion.
How to implement: Checkout Extensibility → app block from your review provider (Judge.me, Loox, Yotpo, Junip all have checkout blocks). Rotate 5-10 reviews.
2. Trust icons row (benefits stack)
3-5 icons + short text: Free returns / 30-day guarantee / Ships from [city] / Woman-owned / X reviews.
Why it works: Speed-of-trust signals. Icons read faster than paragraphs.
Expected lift: 3-8% on checkout completion.
How to implement: Custom UI block. Keep it visually simple — icons should be monochrome, aligned, no explanation text longer than 3 words each.
3. Subscription savings reminder
If you offer subscribe-and-save, remind customers at checkout that they can save X% by subscribing. Give them a one-tap upgrade.
Why it works: ~15-30% of first-time customers who are on the fence about subscription will opt in if reminded at checkout, when the buy decision is already made.
Expected lift: Not on checkout conversion — on LTV. Subscription rate goes up 5-20% depending on category.
How to implement: Recharge / Bold / Skio all offer checkout blocks that do this. Native subscription apps too.
4. Free shipping progress bar
"You're $12 away from free shipping."
Why it works: AOV lift. Also reduces the "shipping ambush" surprise for first-time buyers.
Expected lift: 5-15% AOV increase. Checkout completion also lifts (fewer shipping-shock abandonments).
How to implement: Cart drawer + checkout page block. Show a real progress bar with dollar amount remaining, not just a text note.
Caution: Only show if free shipping is achievable. If your AOV is $40 and free shipping starts at $200, this backfires (feels unattainable).
5. Guarantee stack above the pay button
3 short guarantees stacked directly above the "Pay now" button:
- 30-day money-back guarantee
- Ships in 24 hours
- Free returns
Why it works: Final-moment reassurance right where the fear peaks. Buyer's hand is on the button; give them the last permission slip.
Expected lift: 4-10% on checkout completion.
How to implement: Checkout UI extension. Keep it 3 items max, one line each.
6. Urgency banner (real, not fake)
Real deadline or low-stock signal at the top of checkout:
- "Order in the next 2 hours for same-day dispatch"
- "3 left in stock at your size"
- "Sale ends 11:59 PM tonight"
Why it works: Loss aversion is a strong motivator when the buyer is already 80% decided.
Expected lift: 3-9%. Higher if the urgency is real and time-bound.
How to implement: Checkout header block. Must be real — Shopify Analytics + honesty requirement. Fake countdowns kill trust when regulars catch on.
7. Order bump — high-margin add-on
One relevant, low-friction add-on with a checkbox at the cart level:
- Product care kit (+$8)
- Gift wrapping (+$5)
- Priority shipping (+$4)
Why it works: Pure margin bolt-on. 10-25% of buyers add it if it's actually useful.
Expected lift: 5-15% AOV increase from the take rate.
How to implement: Any post-purchase / cart upsell app (ReConvert, Bold, Rebuy). Keep to ONE bump. More clutters and reduces overall conversion.
8. Post-purchase upsell
After they hit "Pay now" and before the thank-you page, offer one product at a special price.
Why it works: They've already committed. Second-product conversion is 3-5x higher than a normal upsell.
Expected lift: 5-12% AOV increase, no impact on primary checkout completion.
How to implement: ReConvert / Zipify / Bold. Offer must be genuinely a deal (e.g., 25% off, one-time only).
9. Gift options at checkout
Checkbox: "This is a gift." Reveals gift note field + optional gift wrap for +X.
Why it works: Captures gift buyers, who are a huge chunk of Q4 revenue and often skip if the option isn't obvious.
Expected lift: Not on rate — on capture. 8-20% of Q4 buyers use it if offered.
How to implement: Checkout UI extension. Simple checkbox + conditional fields.
10. Fewer form fields
Every form field you cut lifts conversion.
Check yours:
- Do you need address line 2? (usually no)
- Do you need company name? (only for B2B)
- Do you need marketing consent as a required field? (never; make optional)
- Are you asking for phone AND SMS opt-in? (combine)
- Are you asking for a shipping method preference before you've shown pricing?
Expected lift: 2-6% per unnecessary field removed.
How to implement: Shopify checkout settings → customize fields. Test one removal at a time.
11. Delivery estimate specificity
"Delivered Tuesday, Nov 12" > "3-5 business days" > "Free shipping."
Why it works: Concrete future dates reduce abandonment. Vague ranges create uncertainty.
Expected lift: 4-10%.
How to implement: Shipping calculator that computes real dates based on customer zip + your fulfillment cutoff. Apps: Estimated Delivery Date, Route.
12. Express checkout placement
Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal — where they sit matters.
Test:
- All 4 buttons visible at top of checkout (usually wins for mobile-heavy stores)
- Vs. hidden behind "more options" (usually loses)
- Vs. only Shop Pay visible (wins when Shop Pay account rate is high in your customer base)
Expected lift: 5-15% on mobile checkout completion.
How to implement: Shopify checkout settings → payment method order. Toggle on all express methods you support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Shopify Plus?
Basic supports most tests via app blocks. Full Checkout Extensibility (custom sections, custom logic) needs Shopify Plus. Advanced plan supports some middle ground.
How much traffic before I can A/B test?
At least 300 completed checkouts per variant per week for a 7-14 day test to have signal. Below that, roll out one change at a time and compare weekly averages.
What's the biggest mistake in checkout testing?
Testing too many changes at once. You'll never know what moved conversion. One change at a time; be patient.
Should I add live chat at checkout?
Almost never. Live chat at checkout creates second-guessing. If someone has specific questions, they should have asked pre-cart. Chat at checkout usually correlates with abandonment increase, not decrease.
What's the highest ROI test for a small store?
Free shipping progress bar (AOV lift) + review block (trust). Both work at any traffic level, low implementation cost, meaningful lift.
