How to properly use Shopify Sidekick (and where it falls short)

Shopify Sidekick (formerly Shopify Magic + Sidekick, now merged) is the AI assistant built into your Shopify admin. It can query your store data, answer questions about orders and inventory, edit theme copy, generate images, and set up basic automations. Used right, it saves real time. Used wrong, it becomes a novelty that never gets past "write me a product description."
Below is the operator's guide — what Sidekick is genuinely good at, where it falls short, and how we combine it with Claude + the Brand Brain in production Shopify workflows.

Key Takeaways
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is Sidekick? | Shopify's built-in AI assistant. Queries store data, edits theme text, generates copy/images, sets up basic automations. |
| What's it best at? | Data lookups ("top 10 SKUs last 30 days"), quick copy edits, theme text changes, image background swaps. |
| Where does it fall short? | Voice consistency across long copy, multi-step ops workflows, brand-specific reasoning, anything requiring context outside Shopify. |
| Should I replace copywriters with it? | No. Combine with Claude for long-form drafting; use Sidekick for admin-embedded quick edits. |
| Free? | Included with all Shopify plans as of 2025. |
| Best mental model | Sidekick is your admin's search bar with hands. It's not your marketing team. |
What Sidekick actually is
Sidekick lives in the top-right of your Shopify admin. It has three roles:
1. Query interpreter. Ask it "which products sold most last month" or "how many pending orders are over 3 days old" — it converts natural language into a query against your store data and answers.
2. In-admin editor. It can edit product titles, descriptions, theme copy, meta descriptions — with the change applied directly in the admin after your approval.
3. Task setup assistant. It walks you through creating discounts, shipping rules, email automations, workflow triggers — without you clicking through menus.
That's the honest scope. It's an admin agent, not a marketing AI, not a strategist, not a copywriter. Treat it that way and it saves hours.
Where Sidekick wins
Six use cases where Sidekick genuinely earns its place:
1. Instant store-data queries.
- "Show me the top 10 SKUs by revenue in the last 90 days"
- "Which orders from October are still unfulfilled?"
- "What's my average AOV by traffic source this month?"
These would take you 4-6 clicks + a report load. Sidekick answers in ~5 seconds.
2. Product / collection metadata edits at small scale.
- "Update the SEO title on this product to include 'insulated'"
- "Add this product to the Spring Collection"
- "Change the vendor field on all products tagged 'linen' to 'MillCo'"
For 1-20 edits at a time this is faster than the bulk editor.
3. Basic theme copy tweaks.
- "Change the hero headline on the homepage from X to Y"
- "Update the shipping message on the cart page to say free over $75"
Beats clicking through the theme editor for a single-line change.
4. Discount / promo setup.
- "Create a 15% off code for subscribers only, valid this weekend"
- "Set up free shipping over $50 for orders from the US"
Faster than the discount UI and it double-checks the rules with you.
5. Order / customer lookups.
- "Find the last order from Sarah Chen"
- "Show me any customers who ordered more than 3 times in the last 6 months"
Straight admin queries, answered instantly.
6. Basic image edits.
- "Remove the background from this product image"
- "Generate a lifestyle background for this SKU"
Image ops that would take 2-5 min in Photoshop, done in 30 seconds.
Where Sidekick falls short
Six places we do NOT use Sidekick — where Claude, Brand Brain, or a human handles it:
1. Long-form copy at brand voice. Sidekick's product description outputs are middle-of-the-road generic. Voice locking is weak. We use Claude with the 4-layer prompt structure instead.
2. Multi-step reasoning across data sources. Sidekick answers Shopify questions with Shopify data. It doesn't know your Klaviyo flows, your Meta ad performance, your CS ticket themes. Anything cross-system needs Claude + integrations or the Brand Brain.
3. Strategic decisions. "Which SKUs should we promote next month" isn't a Sidekick question — it's a strategy question that needs context about margin, seasonality, inventory, brand priorities. Sidekick will confidently answer with the top revenue SKUs, which is often wrong.
4. Bulk operations at scale. For 100+ SKU updates, use Matrixify or the bulk editor. Sidekick is fine at 1-20; over that it's slower than a CSV import.
5. Brand-specific reasoning. Sidekick doesn't know your product decisions from Slack, your voice rules, or your recent CS themes. Anything requiring that context needs the Brand Brain.
6. Ad copy or email flows. These live in Meta and Klaviyo respectively. Sidekick doesn't reach into either. Use Claude with the relevant integration.
The 8 prompts we use weekly
The prompts that pay for themselves every week:
1. "Show me all products with less than 5 units in stock and a sell-through of 3+/week over the last 30 days"
2. "Which products in the last 30 days had a return rate over 8%?"
3. "How many orders are pending fulfillment older than 48 hours?"
4. "Update the meta description on all products in the 'linen' collection to include 'oeko-tex certified'"
5. "Create a discount code TEAM20 for 20% off, single-use, no expiry, for customer tag 'team'"
6. "Show me the top 5 collections by revenue over the last 60 days"
7. "What was my ROAS from social traffic last month?" (approximate — Sidekick pulls session revenue by source)
8. "Turn off the free shipping banner on the cart page temporarily"
Each of these replaces a 3-5 minute admin task with a ~10 second query.
Sidekick + Claude + Brand Brain — the stack
The mental model:
- Sidekick = the admin's hands. Small edits, quick queries, in-admin tasks.
- Claude (with Brand Brain context) = the copy layer. Product descriptions, blog posts, email drafts, ad copy — anywhere voice matters.
- Brand Brain = the memory layer. Voice, product facts, current decisions — read by every workflow.
A real weekly rhythm using all three:
- Monday: Sidekick lookup — "top movers last week, biggest returns, unfulfilled backlog" (5 min admin scan)
- Tuesday: Claude drafts weekly Klaviyo campaign using this week's Brain state (voice + facts)
- Wednesday: Sidekick updates the SEO titles on the 3 new SKUs Claude wrote descriptions for
- Thursday: Claude drafts 3 Meta ad-copy variants; Brain provides voice + current promo rules
- Friday: Sidekick sets up the weekend promo code + updates the hero banner
Nobody's "doing AI." Everyone's just working, with the right tool for each task.
Safety notes
Two things to know:
1. Sidekick can execute actions. It doesn't just answer — it can change your admin. Always review the change before you approve it. Sidekick is confident even when wrong, especially on bulk edits.
2. Sidekick can see everything in your admin. That includes customer PII, orders, revenue, taxes. Only give Sidekick access to team members who should see that data. Sidekick's permissions inherit from the Shopify user account.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a paid Shopify plan to use Sidekick?
No. Sidekick is available on Shopify Basic and up. Some advanced features (bulk admin actions, some analytics queries) may require Shopify or higher.
Can Sidekick write blog posts?
It can draft, but the voice consistency is weaker than Claude and you can't easily give it a long-form structure prompt. Use Claude for blogs.
Can I turn Sidekick off for certain staff?
Yes. Staff permissions in Shopify admin let you restrict Sidekick access per role.
What data does Sidekick send to Shopify's models?
Store data queries stay within your shop's context. Shopify's AI privacy docs cover the specifics; the short version is customer PII isn't used to train models cross-shop.
Sidekick vs. Shopify Magic — same thing?
Yes, essentially. Shopify merged Magic (writing tools) and Sidekick (assistant) into one interface in late 2024. Everything you'll see in-admin now is under the Sidekick brand.
